Danmark!

A new day, a new country! Well, actually Danmark is the only one of the Scandinavian countries I had actually been before, although I didn’t see much of it, and I definitely didn’t try the beer bars…

But before I even got there, I still had a couple of hours to go on the MS Nordic Crown. Since the sun rises quite early that far north, so did I, and before eight, I was already enjoying the very extensive breakfast buffet in the Kull restaurant.

Since I had already packed my bag, I had plenty of time to observe the arrival process.

Finally on land again, I hopped on the train to get to my hotel. To my delight, Wakeup Copenhagen already had a room ready for me, saving me quite a lot of time.

Just down the street was one of many Original Coffee outlets, which satisfied my coffee needs for the morning.

Then it was just another short walk to the National Museum of Denmark. There I learned that Danmark was quite a bit more imperialistic than I realised.

After a coffee and a rye bread smørrebrød with chicken at Sonny, I headed all the way to Mikkeller Baghaven, which was not even on my original itinerary, because it was quite far…

A bus and a metro then brought me back to another hip part of town, for a coffee at Prolog Coffee Bar

Just around the corner was Fermentoren, an awesome beer bar I would love to have in my neighbourhood.

But I really had to go to Warpigs Brewpub for at least some of their locally brewed beers, and some of their Piggy Poppers.

For a proper dinner I went to Chicky Grill, where I had Flæskesteg (roast pork).

After that I was up for a few more beers: one at Mikkeller Bar Viktoriagade—they didn’t have more than one that appealed to me on the menu anyway—and a few more at the half-in-Tivoli-embedded Anarkist Bar.

On On to Oslo!

Friday is when the weekend starts, so it was also the day when the InterScandi hash event started! That meant I had to get a train to Oslo first, and to then kick it off with a little pub crawl.

While I was having breakfast in the SJ Lounge in Stockholm Central, the platform number for my train disappeared off the screen. That didn’t bode well… My SJ 3000 to Oslo eventually departed with a thirty minutes delay, which grew to almost an hour during the six hour long ride. Unfortunately this type of train doesn’t have any solo seats, but the seats were wide enough to be comfortable and not in anyone’s way.

After arrival in Oslo, it was just a short bus ride—I didn’t feel like lugging my bag around town—to the Crow Bar & Bryggeri, where Interscandi officially started with a checkin and bag drop, and the first beer of the pub crawl. Loads of familiar faces, from Brussels and elsewhere…

The pub crawl was actually just a list of suggestions, half of which were on my to-do list anyway. My first stop was at Henry & Sally’s, Mikkeller’s bar in Oslo. Unlike yesterday, I actually bought my Mikkeller Passport and had it stamped.

My second stop was at Oslo Street Food, where I got myself the Gangnam Chicken from Tunco

After that I headed to Crafty Dog, once Oslo’s BrewDog bar, and it still shows. No tattoo or EFP discounts, though!

I then still had time for a last beer at Café Sara, before a bus would take us to our accommodation for the weekend, Rønningen Folkehøgskole

Battleship for Beginners

A new day in a city I have only hashed and drunk in so far, that means museum time! And of course the ongoing quest to try national dishes and as many local beers and bars as possible…

Sleeping anywhere but home is always a challenge, but after a shaky night on a sleeper train, a night in a completely dark, immovable bed at Citybox Stockholm was pure bliss…

After I finally got out of bed, I went for breakfast at Greasy Spoon: a Classic Benedict, and a coffee by local roastery Lykke

Time for the educational part of the day: the Nordiska museet! For once, a museum that didn’t start in the Stone Age, but in the 15th century. Still, there was plenty of history to cover.

Just around the corner was the Vasa Museum, the perfect example of what happens if you prioritise the customer’s wishes over common sense…Still, a beautiful ship!

For lunch I went to Östermalms Saluhall. After some browsing, I had the roastbeef smörgås at Nybroe

After easing into beer yesterday, I decided to start a bit earlier today, at Omnipollos Kyrka. A high-roofed building like that seems to be made for brewing!

Quite a bit smaller was Ölkemi—I didn’t find the actual brewery—where I soon dominated the Untapped menu screens…

After so many hours without caffeine, it was time for coffee and an almond croissant at Café Pascal.

The next beer bar on my list was UDDA.

At Mikkeller Södermalm they were unable to scan any QR codes, but happy to believe I’m a Mikkeller Running Club member…  Oh, and I had the ‘traditional’ Swedish pizza kebab there.

Both Bar Kaja and Oliver Twist celebrated the launch of Repslagargrannar – Sola I Karlstad, but I had it in the first of the two.

The last bar of the night for me was Stigbergets Fot, where I had the Dirty Tots to soak up some alcohol, and a couple of lovely beers.

Warszawa & Berlin – Day 6

Last Full Day…

My last day in Berlin started at Town Mouse Coffee with a delicious—and just spicy enough—”Mouse Trap” sourdough toastie (with Emmental, feta, and the house chutney) and a coffee. Always nice to find places like this near my hotel!

From there I went to the Mitte Museum. I usually make a habit of visiting the ‘local’ museum of any city I visit, but Berlin is so huge, it actually made sense to learn more about the ‘Bezirk’ (borough) I’ve always stayed in. Who knew porcelain was so important for Mitte?

My next stop was at the Museum in der Kulturbrauerei, to learn more about East Germany in its communist years. I had been to a museum with the same theme last year, but this one was definitely less touristy and more educational!

For lunch I went to Burgermeister, apparently an institute in Berlin. Not bad, but definitely not the best burger I’ve had…

For my after-lunch coffee I went to Bonanza Coffee.

After a little break at the hotel to recharge, e went to BrewDog Mitte—just two new beers there—and Mikkeller Berlin. I totally forgot about the Mikkeller Running Club, which had a run right when I was there!

Last time I was there, I didn’t spend enough time in Bräugier Brewpub, so I made up for that this time.

For nostalgia’s sake—I grew up in Limburg after all—for dinner I had a classic veal döner kebap at Kebap House—”Best Döner in Prenzlauer Berg” they say themselves—which is a bit different from the Gemüse Kebap with chicken you often find in Berlin…

My very last beer stop in Berlin was at another place with a banging beer list and great service: Manifest Taproom. The perfect end of my beer journey in Berlin…

Wien, Bayern & Berlin Reise – 9

DDR & Döner

Last full day of my trip, better make it count, right? Well it did!

The day started with a breakfast at Zeit Für Brot again, after which I went to the DDR Museum. It was very crowded, on the eve of Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day), and as far as I could tell, most of the other visitors were people that grew up in communist Eastern Germany, telling their children about how they actually know everything on display from first-hand experience!

After a coffee in what must be The Barn with the most impressive view, it was time for a visit to the Helmut Newton Stiftung. Hungry after looking at all the photos, I had some Leber Berliner Art at the Dicke Wirtin.

Beer o’clock? Beer o’clock! First, the Schneeeule Salon, for some Berliner Weisses. Then—after being unable to find it last time I was in Berlin—the Vagabund Kesselhaus. It was definitely better signposted this time, although the fact that is was still light might also have aided in finding it this time…

No visit to Berlin is complete without a döner kebab, so a quick stop at Kebap 63 before heading to the next beer destination was a must.

That next beer destination was Bar Amélie, a cocktail and beer bar I initially even didn’t remember of why I put it on the list. Looking at the tap list, however, it became immediately clear: this was the taproom of some excellent new brewers going by the name of Unverhopft. It turned out to be a very cool place, with enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff!

Last stop of the evening was at Mikkeller, since it’s right around the corner from my hotel.
