Running & Reindeer

The last day of InterScandi—including a short run—but the first day of properly exploring Oslo! Well, I mostly discovered the bars, since it was a bit late for museums already…

But first the coaches took us and our luggage a bit closer to Oslo centre. We got off the coaches to start our Hangover Run, the luggage was then further transported to Pakkhuset Oslo, where our run finished. A final Circle and a sandwich, and that concluded InterScandi 2026

My CityBox Oslo hotel was only a couple of hundred metres away, so I quickly checked in, had a shower and a change, and I was ready to discover the rest of Oslo!

A quick coffee or two at Hakone Coffee, and I was off to the Amundsen Bryggeri & Spiseri. Lovely people behind the bar, and some really nice beers, brewed in the tiny brewery just behind the glass. 

Next: Dr. Jekyll’s Pub—with a cool hidden toilets entrance—and RØØR.

Finally time for some Norwegian cuisine, and Elias Mat & Sånt had exactly what I was looking for: finnbiff! This reindeer stew with bacon, mushroom, onion and carrot, double cream and brown cheese sauce, was served with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, and it was delicious. 

Sufficiently fed, I was ready for some more beer, trying to keep my selection as local as possible. Luckily Mad Goat Tap Room and Brewgata both had plenty of choice. 

InterScandi Saturday

Regular readers will know by now: the Saturday of a weekend-long hash event always includes a long run during the day, a nice dinner, and a party. InterScandi was of course no different. 

After breakfast, colourful groups of participants took off at different times for each of the different difficulty levels of trail. For the trail I chose—simply know as the “long” trail—the start was actually from Snippen, a train station one stop away from our accommodation in Kjelsås. From the train we could already see what to expect: lots of rocky climbs and descents, dense woods, and rain… While clouds and mist obscured some of the views, it was still a beautiful 16km run/walk/climb.

For dinner we had a tasty and satisfying Indian curry—I guess my exploration of Norwegian cuisine will have to wait until Sunday evening—and some kind of crumble for dessert. 

The party—themed “Circus”—included live music by “WrONg DirectiON”, a group of musical hashers. Oh, and I found out Face ID doesn’t work if I’m wearing a clown’s nose…

On On to Oslo!

Friday is when the weekend starts, so also the day when the InterScandi hash event started! Since the event was in Oslo, and I was still in Stockholm, that meant I still had to get a train there first, to then kick off another crazy hash weekend with a little pub crawl, which even crazier beer prices… 

While I was having breakfast in the SJ Lounge in Stockholm Central, the platform number for my train disappeared off the screen. That didn’t bode well… My SJ 3000 to Oslo eventually departed with a thirty minute delay, which grew to almost an hour during the six hour long ride. Unfortunately this type of train doesn’t have any solo seats—which I prefer when travelling alone—but the seats were wide enough to be comfortable and not to bother or be bothered by anyone. 

After arrival in Oslo, I took a short bus ride—I didn’t feel like lugging my bag around town—to the Crow Bar & Bryggeri, where InterScandi officially started with a check-in, goodies handout, and storing away everyone’s luggage, and of course the first beer of the pub crawl! Loads of familiar faces, quite a few from Brussels, and a lot more from elsewhere…

The ‘pub crawl’ was actually just a list of suggestions where you then inevitably bump into other hashers. Half of those bars were on my to-do list anyway though, so the organisers did a great job, in my opinion. My first stop was at Henry & Sally’s, Mikkeller’s bar in Oslo, but apparently there is some law in Norway forbidding bars named after alcohol brands. Unlike yesterday when I forgot, I actually bought my Mikkeller Passport this time, and I had it stamped. 

My second stop was at Oslo Street Food, where I got myself the Gangnam Chicken from Tunco

After that I headed to Crafty Dog, once Oslo’s BrewDog bar, and it still shows. No tattoo or EFP discounts, though, but apparently they do give discounts for hashers! 

I then still had time for a last beer at Café Sara, before a bus would take us to our accommodation for the weekend, Rønningen Folkehøgskole. There I was lucky enough to be assigned a single room, which was a nice surprise. A few more beers, and then it was time to turn in for the night.

A Short Trail and a Long Trip

The last day of a hash event is usually a short one, to give participants enough time for the voyage home. On the programme: the Hangover Trail!

The Hangover Trail was as usual quite short—just 4,5 km sightseeing through Hamburg today—and followed by a circle to close off the whole weekend.

While the trail only lasted an hour, the voyage home, which should only take 6,5 hours including transfers, would take me 9 hours in the end! Just as well I didn’t book the latest trains, since I would then probably have had to spend the night in Köln! The extended transfer times of 45 minutes in Hannover and of 1,5 hours in Köln did mean I could take my time for a coffee—although just not enough time to go to a specialty coffee place—and a proper meal in Köln: Leberkäse mit Spiegelei, Bratkartoffeln, Krautsalat und süßem Senf (meat loaf with fried egg, fried potatoes, coleslaw, and sweet mustard) at Gaffel am Dom. And I had some Kölsch… I didn’t plan to, but when their first question is “Ein Kölsch?”, it’s hard to say no!

Then, again in true Deutsche Bahn style, the departure of my last train was about 35 minutes delayed… It did do the job of taking me home though, so this is where my story ends!

More Interscandi!

The first and only full day of Interscandi continues to follow the usual schedule: breakfast, run, lunch on the way, circle, and dinner and a themed party. Considering we were based in the second largest city of Germany, we had a surprisingly green run!

After last night’s pub crawl, the hot dorm room, and the loud music from the venues on the Reeperbahn, not everyone made it in time for breakfast, but luckily I did!

After an U-Bahn and an S-Bahh to Hoheneichen, we were ready to run the trail. My choice was the long trail, good for 14,3 km of running, including some ‘checking’ (running in the wrong direction to find out where the trail actually continues).

So, a note about the party and dinner: the theme was ‘vikings in drag or flip flops’, although the formulation changed over time, and mermaids were squeezed in there somehow as well… I decided to just go for a viking in a viking dress.

Since I’m not much of a party goer, I snuck out early to put my battle axe safely away, change into my usual kilt, and go back to Craft Bier Bar Hamburg, probably the bar with the most interesting taplist at the moment!
